Cardinale Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2019
It may say “Napa Valley” on the label, but that doesn’t begin to tell the story of this momentous, multi-layered stunner. According to winemaker Christopher Carpenter, the 2019 release “was born from eight appellations, 11 vineyards, and 32 individual wine lots.” Talk about having all the right tools immediately at hand! Expert tasters marveled at its combination of rich fruit, profound minerality, precision, structure, and polish. Blackberry, cassis, tobacco, graphite, dried flowers, black olives…the tasting impressions are as plentiful as the roster of vineyard sources!

Although the beautiful Cardinale winery is on Route 29 just north of Yountville, the secret sauce of this estate is found in the rugged hillsides hovering over the Valley floor. Over the course of its long and distinguished history, Cardinale has focused almost exclusively on one thing: powerful, layered, distinctly age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley’s mountain appellations. Each year, winemaker Christopher Carpenter has one of the most enviable painter’s palettes a vintner could hope for, selecting fruit from a multitude of prime vineyards across eight appellations—most notably Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain - which always supply the core of the blend, but also mountain and benchland sites in Spring Mountain, Diamond Mountain, Stags Leap, and beyond. There’s plenty of power here, sure, but the real key to this Napa classic is balance. You couldn’t ask for a better benchmark for your cellar.
