1881 Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga 2017
This is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon made from the northernmost AVA of Napa Valley. From the foot of Mt. St. Helena it spreads to a dramatic landscape with both steep canyons and serene valley floor vineyards.
"Ruby, blood red, opaque to the core but only just. Aromas of black cherry, fresh berry, the very merest hint of leaf and rain-soaked fresh earth. Wonderful wealth of flavors on the palate however nothing wimpy on this, despite the 'quieter' aromatics, this is a rich, powerful, concetrated, seriously savory, layered wine made from the ripest fruit. The tannins are well integrated already and just beginning to resolve but the wine will continue to develop for another 5 years and hold a further 5-7 years. The savory nature of the wine, almost ferrous, will marry beatifully with steaks, burgers, grills and deep-ocean fish. The AVA-designated 1881 Napa wines are crafted by Thane Knutson especially to be housed in the historic residence adjacent to Oakville Grocery. The Victorian was once the residence of the founders of the Oakville Grocery, which has been in continuous operation since 1881. This is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon made from the northernmost AVA of Napa Valley. From the foot of Mt. St. Helena it spreads to a dramatic landscape with both steep canyons and serene valley floor vineyards. It is however, the most geologically uniform of all areas in Napa Valley with mostly well-drained volcanic soils. This Cabernet is concentrated, full of black fruit with fine grained tannins that are powerful and slightly drying on the long finish.
